Teen FAQ

Do I need to have a permit to take Driver Education?

No, but you do have to be at least 15 years old. We recommend taking the class just after your 15th birthday. Here’s why! Effective November 1, 2012, students who have COMPLETED the driver education program with Cowboy Driving Academy before getting a permit will have the written test waived when they go to the DPS to get their permit (student must present to DPS their CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION, this is not the contract). However, they can obtain a permit by presenting the CONTRACT that they receive once they have completed the 10 hour classroom requirement (no driving required at this point) but will be required to take the written test. The written test may be taken the day after the 10 hour classroom requirement is completed. (20 Questions/Multiple Choice and make a 75% to pass). To get your permit test waived, you must complete the 10 hour Driver’s Education Class and your 6 hours of in car, behind the wheel instruction prior to getting your permit (the day you turn 15 1/2 is the earliest this can take place).

Do I have to go to Department of Public Safety (DPS) when I turn 16 to take my drive test?

No, effective November 1, 2012 Cowboy Driving Academy is able to administer the STATE ROAD EXAM by appointment. Cowboy Driving Academy is able to administer the state road exam virtually anytime…evenings and weekends (we are not limited to DPS hours of operation nor are we limited by weather). We have 4 DPS Certified Driver’s License Examiners on staff and a former examiner of 8 years as an instructor.

Do my parents need to accompany me when I take my permit test and/or drive test?

Yes, a parent or legal guardian is required to be present at DPS for a student under 18 to receive their permit (unless the student is accompanied by this affidavit). A parent or legal guardian is also not required to be present for the State Road Test (Driver’s License Test). The following Affidavit will need to be completed to allow the student to test without their parents. This prevents parents from taking off work and waiting in lines at DPS/Tag Office all day. 50hr. Drive Test Affidavit.

Do I need to have a permit to drive with an instructor?

You only need to have one if you are 18 or older and have not completed our Driver’s Education Class. Otherwise you do not need a permit to drive with CDA. However, you must have a permit to drive with someone at home. We recommend everyone get a permit at 15 1/2. You may wish to refer to our Adult FAQs Page.

Do I have to finish the class and all my drives to get my permit?

No, you only have to finish the driver education class. You have one year to finish all of your drives. The written test maybe taken the day after the 10 hour classroom requirement is completed. (20 Questions/Multiple Choice and make a 75% to pass). To get your permit test waived, you must complete the 10 hour Driver’s Education Class and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel, in car instruction before you get your permit.

Do I need to practice driving on my own time in addition to my drive time with Cowboy Driving?

Yes practice on your own. If you do not practice, you will not learn the skills necessary to master the tasks. We recommend you practice as much as possible on your own time (with a permit) while you are taking lessons with us. The Department of Public Safety requires 50 hours of driving with a parent before a teen can get his/her license. The associated affidavit is located here DPS Affidavit. This may be used if a parent or legal guardian is unable to take their student to DPS for processing after their test is complete.

When do I do the 6 hours driving time?

After you complete the classroom time, the driving instruction is done in 2 hour sessions. You have 6 months to complete your BTW (Behind-The-Wheel) requirement. On 3 different days, you will drive 2 hours with one on one instruction. Driving sessions are scheduled at your convenience. This allows you to customize your student’s training schedule. The driving time must be complete before taking the state road exam giving you six months to schedule 3 drives. We have 10 cars driving students 6 days a week, they are typically booked several weeks in advance. Don’t book your drives at the last minute.

How do I schedule my 3 driving times?

Within 24 hours of registering for the class of your choice on our website, you will receive your user name and password via email (When you register please provide at least 2 email addresses that are checked regularly). You or your student will schedule your drives on our website (no phone calls necessary to schedule drives). We will cover this in more detail during the Parent Meeting (the first hour of the first day of class).

When can I take the written test?

You may take the written test to obtain a learner’s permit at the age of 15 1/2 if you are attending a driver education course. The written test can be taken the day following the completion of the 10 hour Driver’s Education Class.

How quickly can I finish?

The finish time depends on you and how quickly do you want to finish. The class times are scheduled, however, students schedule their own drive time. We cannot determine when you will be finished, but we will work with you to help you make this happen in a timely manner (school, work, weather and other factors impact completion of your Driver’s Education). With our Driver’s ed packages you may finish your required Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) drive time within 6 months. The exception is that Cowboy Classic may finish in 90 days and Cowboy Classic Express in 30 days. If you need to finish faster than 30 days, with Cowboy Classic Express you may also purchase a BTW Service Pack to finish within a week if you so choose.

How long do I have to get my program finished?

You have one year from the day of class to complete your drive time and take your driving test. If over one year, a re-instatement fee of $50 will be charged.
